Country on-the-job training has proven a winner for Tintinara’s Candy Canvas Administration Manager, Tim Harkness.
He has recently completed a Certificate Three in Business Administration with the Ascent Training Group and initiated by Australian Apprenticeships through Business SA. With a background in four and five star hotel management, Tim admitted he hadn’t had formal training in areas such as accounting procedures and was happy to take on the training which was a requirement when he was offered the position at Candy Canvas. “I enjoyed the course and it fitted in well with work and home commitments,” he said. “Everything I have studied throughout the course has been relevant to my specific job responsibilities and requirements.” Some subjects covered by course were accounting, payroll, customer service as well as OH&S and Tim is now keen to complete the training to gain a Certificate Four in Business Administration this year. It is not the first time the progressive country based business has offered on-the-job training to staff and business owner, Phil Candy said they will continue to do so in the future. His business partner, Sandy Candy agrees. “I would recommend this type of training to other businesses,” she said. “It gives me the freedom to go out and concentrate on marketing, knowing I have a qualified Administration Manager to take care of everything else.” Subjects were also tailored to meet the specific needs of the business with assignments offered relative to the job description. Phil, Sandy and Tim could also choose the subjects to study that were relative to the business. With all assignments emailed, regular contact with a trainer and no need to travel from the workplace, on-the-job training makes attaining qualifications and knowledge much easier for country employees and businesses. Managing Director of the Mount Gambier based, Ascent Training Group, Andrew Hardiman, says training people for their job on-the-job is their specialty and their qualified trainers are industry experienced in Business, Administration and Retail. He says traineeships also offer other incentives to business. “Via traineeships businesses can access funded training & rebates from the government when they employ new staff. We also have management & leadership programs for existing staff that are free to businesses,” he explained. |
