For years, Baby Boomers have enjoyed the freedom, camaraderie and sense of adventure that comes with exploring Australia in their own "home on wheels" Now, a new generation of Aussie adventurers is discovering the affordability and independence of caravanning holidays.

Many exhibitors at recent Caravan & Camping Shows in Adelaide, Perth and Melbourne have reported strong interest from the Generation X demographic, singles and families alike, in recreational vehicles such as camper-trailers, tent-trailers and slide-ons.

With average retail prices for new product ranging from $10,000 - $40,000, the smaller, more portable variety of recreational vehicle is well priced to suit the 30 - 45 Gen X age group, many of whom have happy memories of caravanning during their own childhood and now want their children have the same experiences.

Phil Candy of Candy Canvas, manufacturers of slide on campers, said he was pleasantly surprised to see so many younger caravanning enthusiasts visiting Caravanning & Camping shows.

"Generation X has a whole different thought process than Baby Boomers (behind purchasing a camper-trailer product)," said Phil. "Many are at an age where they’ve got a couple of young kids and they want to take them camping and relive the camping experiences they had as kids.

"They also like slide on campers because they can take their toys with them," said Phil, explaining that extra holiday accoutrements like motorbikes, horsefloats, speedboats - you name it - could easily be towed along behind the vehicle with the slide on camper installed.

Generation Xers are providing this segment of the caravanning market with a great boost of confidence during these otherwise gloomy economic times.

Jodie Joyce, of camper-trailer manufacturers The Complete Campsite, said the general consensus from visitors to the recent Victorian Caravan & Camping Show was that the financial crisis had no impact on their decision to buy, or whether or not to consider buying a caravanning product in the near future.

"People are concerned about the economy, but it hasn’t affected their buying," said Jodie. "And because they can get their camper-trailers custom designed they know they’re getting something that suits their needs and will make their trip comfortable – so it’s value for money."
